$4,000 Pizza Prank has Happier Ending
It wasn't your usual pizza place robbery, but the results of a widely reported pizza parlor prank in Amherst, Massachusetts had the same effect, in the end, Antonio's pizzeria was out nearly $4,000. Now it looks like the story might have a happier ending. Many news outlets carried the story when a man wearing a Bob Dylan backstage pass around his neck just a few hours after Bob Dylan performed at the nearby University of Massachusetts Mullins Center ordered 178 pizzas to go but never paid for them or picked them up.
In addition to the unpaid bill, the mystery man also promised the employees at Antonio's a big tip if they would stay open past their normal closing time and work on the order until 5:30 a.m. Now it appears the man felt a bit guilty about the prank and has offered to pay for the order after all. Amherst attorney Sean Cleary did not reveal his client's name, but said that an agreement was in place and that "There was a deal struck between my client and the pizza parlor and I think both sides are pleased with the outcome to the extent that it was resolved."
After detectives identified the suspect on a surveillance videotape, Amherst police said the deal between the suspect and Antonio's would end the department's involvement and that there would not be any criminal charges. Because it is not a criminal case, the police will not be releasing the identity of the man, but attorney Cleary did say that his client was a decent guy who felt bad about what he did. It's great that Antonio's will get paid for their pies, but some might still wonder if the mystery man would have paid up if he had not been identified by the surveillance cameras?
