Being a fish-eating vegetarian (I realize to some that may be an oxymoron), I already have a long list of things I would never eat. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been a vegetarian for almost 30 years when I decided at 12 to become both a veterinarian and a vegetarian. Gone were the days of pepperoni pizza, meatball grinders, Hebrew National Hot Dogs and even beef jerky (yes, a guilty pleasure). I remember the first night of my proclamation my father made me tasteless tofu thinking he might scare me back into eating meat but only scared me away from tofu.
As I embraced my vegetarian life I became adventurous in eating new things including both cooked and raw fish. While I still have texture issues, sushi 
is one of my all time favorite meals which is funny because before then I would see people eating sushi wondering how they could ever digest that. One food I honestly thought I would never eat was anchovies. Just by look itself, it was a food foul. Then I started to add anchovies to sauce when I discovered a Puttanesca recipe and realized how much flavor it added. As I perused one of my favorite go to Italian Cookbooks, The Italian Cooking Encyclopedia, I kept passing over the Pizza with Mozzarella and Anchovies with both curiosity and hesitation until I finally got up the nerve to try the recipe and it was delicious!
Here’s the recipe from the cookbook for those that might want to venture out. I will confess, I did not make homemade dough.
Pizza alla Napoletana
Pizza with Mozzarella and Anchovies
Ingredients:
1 lb. peeled plum tomatoes, fresh or canned, weighed whole, without extra juice
1 recipe Basic Pizza Dough rolled out
3 tbsp anchovy fillets in oil, drained and cut into pieces
1 2/3 cups mozzarella cheese, cut into small dice
1 tsp oregano leaves, fresh or dried
salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
3 tbsp olive oil
1. Preheat the oven to 475 F for at least 20 minutes before baking. Strain the tomatoes through the medium holes of a food mill placed over a bowl scraping in all the pulp.
2. Spread the pureed tomatoes on the pizza dough, leaving the rim uncovered. Dot with the anchovy pieces and the mozzarella.
3. Sprinkle with oregano, salt and paper and olive oil. Immediately place in the oven. Bake for the 15-20 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
